In an address to the American Physical Society in 1938, MIT President Karl Compton observed that:

“…modern science has developed to give mankind, for the first time in the history of the human race, a way of securing a more abundant life which does not simply consist in taking away from someone else….”

Professor Compton’s words highlight the great privilege and heavy responsibility of teaching at MIT.  Our goals in the Electromechanical Systems Group are to learn, to teach, and to build.  No technical material was ever created or put to great use by someone who was bored. We leverage research demonstrations, hardware, and results by making them applicable in the classroom and teaching laboratory.  The Electromechanical Systems Group has spearheaded the creation of the Cypress Engineering Design Studio in MIT’s Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, and has led in applying hands-on learning to new educational opportunities and initiatives for undergraduates, graduates, and learners at all age levels.
